Hey, I've got a 4 hole clay ocarina.. not entirely native american but still a classic styled flute.
There is a place in Kensington Gardens Brighton that sells a wide variety of them plus lots of other relevant stuff.
I like the sound of them myself.

Have you heard the River by Nigel Shaw? or anything by Mark holland, both are wonderful to listen to.

If you decide not to make your own, I have one I am prepared to part with. It was made by the father of one of the BCUSA guys (Native American). Sounds beautiful. I'll take pics if you are interested.

I couldn't agree with you more...it made a great break from preparing for the Ofsted Inspection next week. Have you looked at other wooden wind instruments?
