I know some on here have made an axe out of a hammer head
I picked this one up thinking I may at some time have a go as it is only a small one
It had the remains of a handle in it so I removed it and found unusual nails in the wood
Two are tapered to a fine point but the other two are a flattened body and the end is sharpened to a spear point
I have not seen this type before
Any one seen these before and what date were thes made?
thanks

The heads certainly look like they were made in a punched nail heading plate. Not sure about the 'points' though, my reading has indicated that hand-wrought nails tended to have a continuous square taper to a slightly blunt point. These all appear to have cut points. Perhaps the result of a nailsmithing machine?
