Here are the first stages of making me a pair of nessies!

Kit required for the design stage was;

Copy of Nessmuk's book
Pen
Rule
2mm flat stock (O1)

Next is to draw a line down the center of the bar, this helps lay out the design.

Then draw out proportion lines i.e. handle and blade.

With the book as a guide I free hand drew the design onto the steel. the tip of the blade is above centre and the handle falls just lower than center (As it appears to in the picture in the book)

Next is the roughing out stage, I cut these out with an angle grinder but a saw would work just as well! at this point you can see the slight difference in blade and handle shape

I then touched and neatened to the lines with a bench grinder

The next stage is the bevel

And here we are

Well, Pignut, I am glad that somebody has started a post about this.

I,ve seen lots of pics of the finished articles and for a long time,I've had a notion to give it a go, fabbing somesuch, for myself.

(Is it just me, or do others always seem less than completely happy with everything that they make for themselves....sort of self-depreciating, to know all the foibles that went into the making..the conflict of finished item and one's expectations of it..the corrections..the half-formed wish that you'ld never started the ploddy thing! )

I shall watch how you get on, with this.

Best of British' with this project.

'll be back on site in a few weeks.

Good idea there Pignut! I might try something similar, but adapted for the artisically challenged me, with a much expanded photocopy of the picture.

I did not want an exact copy

I have changed the second design a little, it has a deeper belly and different handle shape

All in the name of experimentation!:)

Spot on Seagull. Quite often the case for me, I feel like that. Quite daft I know. That's why when I have made a knife, say, most often than not,I'll sell it. Cos, I know, I can make the ploddy thing better next time :D

Great post, and a good idea to show it as a work in progress! :thinkerg:
Could you explain how you did the bevel so neat, as Im always amazed at this part (tbh dont really understand how it is kept so even!!). Any light on this would be greatly recieved!! :sadwavey:

I used a cheap belt sander with a slow speed (i have taken the side and guard off)

And literaly did it by hand, keeping the knife at a constant angle and checking it frequently, especially at the end closest to the handle ensuring that I kept both sides the same

Reading that back it was not clear if you need anything let me know!

Cheers
