Nice one Matt, thanks for sharing. Just last weekend, my kids learnt how to make a featherstick good enough to take from a firesteel. They've also taken to collecting fluffy seed-heads while we're walking the dogs. The look on their faces shows just why its worth persevering. Great fun all round. :)

I just had to say that yesterday I succesfully built my first 'natural' fire

I missed this thread originally but I manged with birch bark/ thistle and then just birch bark last month and I know how you feel!

I also got my seven year old to do the same with birch bark and a tiny bit of charcloth for a Beaver Scout badge (everyone else baked a cake or boiled an egg!).

There seems to be a science to getting birch bark. Usually it seems to me that younger trees have the best bark but not an absolute rule, and trees seem to shed different size and thickness of bark.
