Mora #1 handle and sheath.

Hi all, I've been given a mora #1 blade.
I have no leather so I thought I'd make the sheath from the same wood as I make the handle.

What I want to know is what's the best way to ensure that the blade will stay in the sheath?

A magnet in the sheath, or a good friction fit?

you could do wood with a leather upper like many traditional pukko sheaths, like the sami antler/leather sheaths

I like the idea of a magnet Crosslandkelly, thank you, I've hot a few small ones lying around too. Would you put one on the inside at the top to grab the blade? Or to grab the collar?

The more traditional leather approach also interests me, what type of leather would I need?

Also I've read about spring locks, anyone know of these?

Decided ill be making it out of yew, hopefully using the lovely contrast in its light and dark parts.

Appreciate it matt but I've made leather ones before and thought I'd challenge myself to a wood one

Ah nice idea, no I'm not basing it on any one thing, I have a vague plan and just making the rest up as I go along.

Just glued up before I shape and fit the tang in. Thinking of putting a collar or maybe another thinner piece of wood to neaten up the entry to the handle.

Thats nice. It reminds me of a Japanese form, Shirasaya or Shikomizue, with a matching wooden handle and sheath. Keep us updated on your progress - I for one love scandis !

Getting there. Have a small gap.... need to fill it with a bolster of some sort.
Any suggestions on how to make one?

A piece of antler cut thin, or a piece of wood veneer? Ive always wanted to use a coin. Id guess a 50p would be about the right size... drill a couple of holes, and use a needle file to size it up to a slot that fits the tang. Slide it on and epoxy it all up.
Or Brisa do a great selection of bolsters.

Use a sander to grind her mug off....

I did a similar thing with a sgian dubh blade. You can see it at:

The wood is english yew, and the caps are made of bone 'buttons' which can be bought or made from large bones. All natural the sheath is held to the knife with a good fit. The sheath can be hung on a belt with a self tightening leather loop strap or simple leather pocket.

A couple of pics of progress, need to finish sanding off but I'm fairly happy.... well... I may start again if I can figure out the best way to take the whole handle off.. or ill buy another... that's a good idea.
