Does anyone know of anywhere that you can purchase mixed dehydrated packs - ie different mixed veg in the same single packet?

Links appreciated

( Yes I know I can make myself , this is more about off the shelf convenience )

It depends on what your objective is…

I started with “Creek Stewart’s Pocket field Guide, Bug out bag recipe book, Do-it-yourself bug out meals for disaster survival” (2020). In my opinion, the goal with the book is to mix dehydrated ingredients with boiling water to create a quick or <10 min meal... But I have some doubt.

The basic ‘formula’ is adding four categories:
  • Grains/Carbs. For fibre and secondary protein. In Creek's book there is a list of grains as the able of contents.
  • Primary protein, often Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP). Jerky is also suggested as an alternative.
  • Vegetables. Usually one or two.
  • Stock. But seasoning, herbs, spices, sugar and maybe thickener or accompaniment is left to you!

With Creek’s book, what’s interesting is there are only 25 ingredients, those of a particular mindset will crack the secret ‘code’. But practically: you could try to 'cheat' and pick the quicker cooking staple ingredients you can source locally... except like TeeDee, I too see something of a hole.

But then I circle back to the opening question: what is your objective.
If I'm stuck with the 'limitation' of dehydrated food... then I'd maybe lean more towards a complete dehydrated meal in a single sealed packet. Even floating towards the idea of a 700ml Thermos Food flask (or similar).

Good question. Good point.
Really detailed response - thank you.

I guess I'm wanting to explore options for creating easy , inexpensive shelf stable meals that are essentially ready to go and as individually packaged and available to make the creation part easy.

The all in one created meals to me seem to be pricey and somewhat limited. Its one pack of stuff lacking any personal amendments.

I'm getting into ramen at the moment - and taking some inspiration from the various odd sods and assortments that are available to create more interesting meals for the occasional day out or walk. I'm not necessarily looking to create any sort of pantry based MRE's but just some fun and interesting ready to go food that can be stored ( ideally coming in their own little packets of veg and seasoning ) to pep up and add interest to some more basic staples.

I've also just acquired a load of flameless MRE style heat pouches and I quite like the idea of seeing just how far I can push the needle from basic staple camping food stuff to something a little more culinary exciting.

I admit when it gets to food I can turn into somewhat of a finnicky experimental dandy - but my response would be , why not?

I guess essentially I'm interested in how 'well' we could create various lighweight , easy to construct , shelf stable 'meals' from what is easily available without paying through the nose.

As an example - Ramen with Peanut butter for me is an upgrade , so the little Peanut sachets from MOD rat packs actually are the correct size and get squirreled away for asian inspired constructions.

Well, dried veggies are a bit hit or miss for really quick additions to ramen.

I am very fond of seaweed, and dried seaweed redoes itself in a couple of minutes in hot stock....to most extents so do fine sliced sweetpeppers and tomatoes. Freeze dried tiny peas do, but bigger ones are not so good. Tiny bits of broccolli do, but potatoes, turnip, carrot, etc., hmmmm. Thin slices of syboes are good (sorry, had to think, Spring Onions in English) as are fine slices of mushroom. Cabbage can be tough, so it leek, seaweed's better.

What vegetables do you like though ?

Facing a bag of dried ones that I knew I wasn't going to manage to boil up for at least half an hour in soup, I whizzed them up into very fine pieces in the blender. Those cooked a lot more quickly.

I've just had a bag load of 'black fungus' delivered...jelly ears/wood ears/tree ears from a Chinese supermarket...UK Oriental Store.
www.WaNaHong.co.uk

They look good, haven't tried them yet, but the shop had a lot of varieties of dried veggies.
