I thought I would share some photos of my latest knife which, as the title suggests, was made on a very tight budget.

The blade was cut from a piece of scrap Landrover leaf spring. The handle and sheath tip were made from Walnut, which I did buy, but this was an offcut left over from another job. The bolster is stainless steel and leather; the stainless I wombled out of a scrap bin at work many years ago, before I ever thought of making a knife (it was shiny and I thought it would come in useful one day)
The sheath leather came from a pair of old boots, and even the rivet on the belt loop was salvaged (it held a plastic strap handle on to a washing powder carton)

I hope you don't all think that I am a tight git; I much prefer the term Frugal.
Thanks for looking.

Thats lovely!!! hope your pleased with the outcome

I try not to spend more than £5-£10 quid on my knives, recycle as much as i can. Problem is im needing another shed, as mine is jammed with possibles and things i just dont want to bin.

Im by no means tight, but i think i may be classed as a 'clepto'.

that is magnificent! amongst all of the high price woodlores and their clones etc. it's great to see that scrap (and a considerable degree of talent!) can make a great knife!

i just wish i had your skills!!!

Fantastic knife mate!

I know what you mean, my workbench is cluttered with all sorts of bits and pieces that I am reluctant to throw away. My mum despairs of me sometimes, and absolutely hates it when something I hoarded "in case it comes in useful" actually does come in useful.

That looks ands sounds spot on fella. Using a bit of leaf spring for one of my next scandis.
Well done, Im sure it'll work just as well as a £200 knife, its just ya not paying for the labour and bits, and can enjoy the fact that you made it.

Now thats good I like that sort of thing especially the sheath style.
Did you not find the stainless a bit of pig to work with?

Thanks for all the positive comments everyone!

The stainless worked OK with fine files and a fine junior hacksaw blade; I guess there are all sorts of different varieties, and I got lucky with my find. I have no idea what type it is. Fortunately I have enough left for the bolster of one more knife, which will be a sgian dubh (the blade has already been made)
