Migrating to Oz

Just wondering if anyone here has made the leap to migrate?

I am giving it serious consideration to it with the way the job markets is in the uk!

after some research my profession is on the demand list. I'm not wanting to move to be better off financial I just want to be able to do the job I love.

I'd be interested to hear words of advice on how you went about it. I was thinking to make use of a migration agency but wondering if I can handle all the visa etc myself

I'm currently contemplating a re-train period to qualify for Oz/NZ or Canada.. any suggestions on a career change that could be easier to do whilst trying to do a full time job? can't stop working to go and restudy but happy to pay for training course and certs or study at home.

Seems part of the problem is that whatever quals + certs you do get here as industry standard are not recognised as such by the relevant countries.

My friend moved out there after re training as a joiner.....maybe night classes in one of those kind of trades?

I'm eligible with My qualifications and career as a ranger.

My friend the joiner went out on a year visa and hasn't come back. I'd rather apply for permanent visa with the idea of taking residency.

34, Married no kids. Small house with low mortgage.

I'm well travelled having worked in quite a few countries so don't think i would struggle to settle down. Like I said the main problem is the cut backs in the UK causing stress with regards to jobs in environmental sector.

We are almost finished in our application to emigrate to Canada, awaiting only the results of our chest X-rays, HIV and syphilis test from our medicals 2 weeks ago and if they're clean then we're in. I am confident that Canada is the place to us over Oz, for lifestyle & economic reasons. I have many friends who have gone to Oz and have not looked back but I have mates who have gone looking but have come back happy that its not for them or frightened off by the costs of both moving and the prices of things when there.

I would say one thing to anyone wanting to leave these shores, be certain its for you as just the application - which for us over 2 years and counting is just soul destroying and had we not had such great friends over there who have pulled some strings and arranged employment and such we would still be in limbo! Our life has been on hold for all that time and now we are faced with crappy house prices and exchange rates.

That said, the last time I was in B.C. I saw 6 potential employers and got 6 good contacts with most saying that they would employ me as a skilled carpenter whilst I struggle along here for work self employed and I have an official arranged employment offer as well as someone else willing to employ me and something else very intriguing which I will find out more about in may! There is that, and my Wife is a copper in Bradford central so for me, just getting us away from that is priceless!

But for us B.C. beckons, the life, the fish, the wilderness, the friends, the Canadians, the wildlife, the freedom and as it stands we will be no worse off financially even without Mrs B getting a job, so I would say go for it! There will never be a "right time" and I have no doubts and I do believe that if you are user of this forum then you would agree!

Interestingly enough ( at least for me ) we visited ex-pat friends in Canada last year , our friend has moved back an forth bewteen the UK for the last few decades staying in situ for 3-5 years and then moving back.
The last time we saw him over there he was considering moving back as the long winters of being basically housebound were driving him nuts.

As you say , be sure of what your getting yourself into.

As you say , be sure of what your getting yourself into.

Were we are locating is the interior of B.C. (Kamloops area) where the climate is better than ours and whilst it was -19c the last time we spoke to them but the last couple of winters we have beat them in the cold winter top trumps!

Alberta on the other hand...........

We flew (in june) from Kamloops it was 34, landed in Calgary it was 22 and the following day it was 2degrees and chuffing snowing! ***!?

My wife and I migrated to OZ after uni, we were there 6 years and had the best time ever. we only moved back after having kids as its hard to be apart from the family. We had lots of good mates there but its not the same as family when the brown sticky stuff hits the fan.
We used a agency to do all our paper work and while it does cost they had a no visa no fee policy. If you told them the truth about yourself and they thought you would get accepected by the country you wanted to migrate to they and you didn't they would give you your money back.
