Maglite size for tracking / General use

Hi,

I was reading on the forum and someone recommended using a torch with green light to highlight tracks as we see better in that spectrum. I also wanted a general one that I could use when out and about. I have my head torch but sometimes a hand one can be urn 'handy'!

I already have a 3D one which is huge and too much weight/size to take out on excursions.

Can anyone recommend a size and link to decent shops. I would like one that I can change colour filters with.

Sack the Maglite, they are poo! I've had quite a few over the years and the bulb is next to useless. You can get drop in LEDs for next to nowt, but they fail eventually what with the twisting of the head to focus the beam. 8 quid, Tesco torch, 3W LED, blinding torch. Folk have started using them for gun lamping and there is a modification online somewhere to change one into a head torch. It's all you'll ever need!

Second vote for the Tesco one!

Great torch for less than a tenner!

I coloured the end of mine with the kids felt tip pen once for a quick fix red filter as I'd lost mine!
Should work with green, or I've used a sweet wrapper [any colour from Roses Qual street etc ;) ]
held on with an eleastic band abandoned by the Postie!

Hope that helps

Don't spend your wedge on a maglite. They may be a well known name, but they are way behind the competition these days. If you want the brightest light for your money, go for a LED Lenser P7. It knocks out 170 lumens for £50 and feels bomb proof.

I've also got the tesco 3W LED torch but I find the switch feels cheap and the batteries rattling in the body is irritating. No where near as bright as the Lenser either. You pays your money......

Leigh,

The green torch you're looking for is the Inova X5 with green led's. Unfortunately, they aren't that easy to get hold of these days. Other torches with green filters may work to a degree but not as well as the X5.

As for other torches people on the froum will be able to suggest some good choices. There is a wide range of options, and prices!, available.

Look here for a few options

I have one of these with the optional filter kit. Has proved to be a good bit of kit.

I would advise to set a price range, think what you would use it for, sort out any options / features you want & then take a good look through what's available. There are so many good options out there you should be able to get something sorted.
