Eley cartridges.

I think you should omit the ‘british ownership’ bit, that is imposdible to know. Most larger companies have a multi national owner base.

If that is OK, then the Landrover car manufacturing. Much bushcrafting can be made using one of their products.
Not sure how long they will continue in UK, production is moving out.

owned by the indians.

I have a 30 year old defender, thats all british - got the solihull build number to prove it!

anyway, kit.
Arktis clothing, designed and made in the uk
Ghillie kettles made in the UK (kelly kettles are made in china iirc)
barbour
many small craft/cottage industries - i butya lot of beekeeping stuff and thats nearly always made in the uk (although cheaper overseas (china) stuff is available.

dunno what else

Geiger Schuhe, Frittlingen makes exclusively shoes and boots in individual measures. That's in the black forest area in south west Germany.

Steinkogler in Austria sells standardised models and individual custom made shoes and boots too.

Steinkogler has 30 employees, Geiger works alone.

I have one size different feet, and since I bought the model Bernina from Geiger for 320 € I am really every day as glad as if it would be christmas.
To use really fitting hiking boots makes a difference like night and day for me.

I can't believe that nobody in Britain offers that service for a reasonable price.

But of course: Austrians and Germans are the leaders of the world market for mountain boots, no question.

yep they are, plenty of mountains available for field testing!!

Landrovers are still British imo, until production is moved.

Not bushcraft equipment? Yes it is in a way. Many expeditions run Landrovers. No ’rover, no expedition.

I am stumped that no factory in Sheffield make knifes anymore.

Missed that. Wright and sons - yes. The other was was artisanal?

Yep, artisan. There may be more larger ones; I don't know.

There are a number specialist manufacturers that do sharpening steels and machine knives etc. and a few that still make cutlery so the industry is still alive just nothing like it used to be.

What is truly sad is that, although there are plenty of tool manufacturers, I can't find any axe manufacturers - something that we had dozens of in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Do you want a full on manufacturer or would individual axe makers be of any use?

Yes, I appreciate there are individuals making tools but the industry as it was a hundred plus years ago is virtually non-existent. Just look at the Spear and Jackson family tree as an example. S&J are still based in Sheffield but don't claim to make anything in the UK as far as I can tell.

I’m currently looking for a well made bag of this (see link below) size and approximate function, which is designed, sourced and made in Britain, preferably by a very small outfit which sells directly via a website. Someone I can name and have a sense of connection with... and support their efforts in some small way.

https://thehiddenwoodsmen.com/product/day-ruck-25-liter-pre-buy/

Can anyone recommend a British small-scale bag maker?

Thanks,

Darryl

Thought it might be a manufacturer that you were after. The situation is a sad one.

I have on my 'to-do' list to have a go at making my own Duluth bag (which is what they look like). They look quite simple and I want a couple that will sit nicely in the canoe. But I can't help with a UK manufacturer, sorry.

John Fenna on this Forum has a sewing machine if you want fabric. His creations are top notch from what I have read.

The Scottish gentleman, Hamish, aka Dreadhead, is a leather wizard.

I must say that it’s easier to buy exactly what I want from small-scale US makers and pay the expense of international shipping, VAT and bizarre PO handling fees, than it is to find the same sort of thing in Britain.

Thanks Janne. If only such information was more obvious to find. Nothing whatsoever against other makers.
