After seeing some cracking knives on show here, I thought I'd have a go at making one, well half of one as bought the blade, as forging is my next goal.
I have to say inspiration has been gained from Soars lovely Scandi, and the Vlidmark Knife on BB. :You_Rock_

First spent two trips to the local woods in search of a Birch burl, and finally found a mature fallen Birch, covered in the things. So I promtly helped myself using the mighty Zubat!

All the bits ready for preping.
The Leif Carlsson Whittler blade from Brisa in Finland, Birch Burl, Brass letter box flap bought years ago and never used, and an old F1 Sheath I was given.

Almost there, signs of hope. Ive got no powers tools except chainsaws and the like, so apart from a cordless drill, just used Silky, Knife, and Files.
At least it keeps you fit.:tongue-ti

And then this appeared, Its got its faults but I love it. Bloomin addictive stuff this knife making lark. Designing, working out probs and working on it for some time now. And that just the handle!

Hope you like, cheers for looking.

That is frikkin awesome mate! What an absolute stunner for both handle and knife, don't try and tell me that that's your first attempt?

By the way, it makes the Orangutan's efforts look like a feeble coffee table job by comparison (I'm kidding). Looks like it has a really nice swell and shape to it from the piccies. Did it take you long? And what did you finish the wood with, linseed oil?

Hi Addo
stunning first knife attempt, next step leatherworking for a sheath.
there is a good tutorial for a scandi sheath in the leatherwork section on BB
:) :)

Cheers guys.

Hi Mick, First one like this. Last one I did was just put the yew handle on the Robin wood whittler, but tbh Bernie did most of that. So thought I'd try one like this.
Should of used a coffee table to set it off I supose, now items to use for scale? hmmm :D Normally I would use Walnut or veg oil on spoons ect, but went for the olive, should be ok though as its well sanded. If it goes furry, i'll re-do.

Hi Chas, Aye thats the sheath tutorial I had in mind. Scruffs rather good at these and he kindly offered to show me how its done. Cant wait!

Took a couple of hrs to rough out the wood from the burl, and slot the brass and leather pieces. Then 4 1/2 hrs of fileing, carving and sanding. Allowing for brews and attaching plasters!

That is a beautiful bit of craftsmanship mate! The handle looks gorgeous. Did you simply chainsaw off the burr? Is that how it works and then hew it down? Did you then drill the handle and glue/epoxy it in place?

Again, top job mate. Another thing on the list of projects to make!!

Craeg;)

Cheers Craeg and everyone else.

Yeah I cut the Burr straight off the tree, but with a Large silky hand saw called a Zubat. Like a chainsaw only much quieter! Then studied the peice looking for soft rot to aviod and a bit big enough with a nice pattern. It uses more wood this way than normal scales would on a full tang, but I can keep adjusting the shape just by whittleing.

Then drilled the hole for the tang and epoxyed into place. The tang is tapered so a hole smaller than the widest part will create a tight fit when tapped into place, and the glue fills the gap and holds it for sure. Some slivers of wood in the hole either side can also help.

Stephen, The spacer was a peice of the F1 sheath. Needs some more oil on it though I think.:)

Thanks fellas. Johns is still the best. Much harder to to a full tang! And its great for food prep.
