It all depends on what your wanting to do with it to be honest :D

Whats your main use going to be ?

cheers Russ

dig post holes, chop up punky wood, clear scrub/brambles, split logs about 8-10" round, make posts 1" and 2", sharpen them up. General camp stuff, yer know.

i dont think there is a machete that is very suitable for the UK tbh. after all they are designed for use in the jungle not the UK.

tramontina are good mines 18 inch blade i think .People keep saying machetes are no good for uk but i use em all the time .
All these people who say machetes no good for uk must not have practised enough at using em,With a machete i can easily gather enough wood for a night in about an hour. And they weight less than an axe and coupled with a bow saw can do most tasks splitting is best left to the axe but unless you are using a stove splitting isnt nessesary.

I've got a 14" tramontina which sees quite a bit of use, I've got two the same as it happens, you want to borrow one at the weekend barney?

I've not used mine for digging holes, but they'll clear brush and split branches (I mean, even a knife'll do that!) the main fault with them is they're not thick enough (4mm would be ideal imho) and the edge doesn't last well, you pay for what you get though I guess.

With practice, they'll cut, sharpen split etc well, you just need to be realistic about what they can and can't do though.

i have machetes and bill hooks cant see much difference really!!!!apart from the hook. What jobs can a billhook do that a machete cant?

a short stout machete is the way forwards. arguably the most versatile bush tool going. ontario and cold steel both do models about a foot long and 1/8 inch thick. which would be ideal. about 20 quid including delivery. they will probably want some work doing to the edge.

the tram's are ok, but a little too skinny. they come with no edge at all.

b&q are currently doing the fiskars brushhooks for 25 quid. light and handy. the edge will be almost perfectly formed and require only a quick de-burring before use. the big nose of the hook makes it a little less versatile than the standard machetes.

cheers, and.

I quite fancy one of those fiskars brush hooks. I keep picking them up and putting them down again in B&Q.
Maybe for the summer...

we used to say that the best power to weight ratio in a chopper was the tiny gb mini. the fiskars hook is a little heavier, but hits much much harder.

the long handle on the fiskars hook is great too. it sort of inspired some of the mods to the standard ontario machete, second from left, in the photo, with the extra long micarta handle.

cheers, and.
