Ludlow and in the wild
Hi folks,
after spending a couple of days wildlife watching up here on the west coast of Scotland, i have realised that my feet are really starting to feel the chill. i have pack boots but, unless there is a good layer of snow, i find them a bit cumbersome and tricky when negotiating rocky terrain.
i have heard a lot of good things about the lundhag boots but there does seem to be a pretty wide range.
what i am looking for is a good, all terrain boot, hardwearing, with the ability to pop on extra socks when it cools down and i am stood around hassling otters and deer.
am thing the vandra high or the ranger. any thoughts, recommendations?

Cheers

I think either boot is good, but I think that you need try them on before buying any of them. Or any other shoe for that matter.

I use Syncro high, two sizes bigger than normal as I wear a liner sock and woolen sock all the time.
I find them to be a bit cold below -10 to -15 C during low activity. Excellent boots for hiking.

My 2 cents

I use Syncro Mid's, still high enough around the ankles imo. To me they are a perfect all-rounder. Sturdy tip that makes them fit excellently in snowshoe-bindings and such. Great ankle support, roomy at the toes (wiggling toes in the cold), easy to get in and out of and quick to lace. I just have about enough room for a thin pair and a thick pair of socks.

The sole is 'rounded' off a bit near the toes which makes them very comfortable for long hikes.

I've had 2 pairs of lundhags and the thing I found with both of them is that you have to try them on because both pairs of mine were size 8/42 and in one pair I could comfortably wear thick socks and the other there was no way they would fit.
You cant fault the quality and finish etc just make sure they fit.:)

Thats great, thanks guys, that agrees with everything i have read about them. all the different models are differently shaped so i really need to try some first.
aside from Nordic outdoors, anyone know of a decent UK stockist.

Cheers

I've tried many boots over the years and always lusted after a pair of Lundhags , luckily a while ago a fellow on here posted a link to Sport pursuit who had some on offer , I took the plunge and can honestly say they are the best boots I've ever had ! I got the Bielne high in my normal size and they fit perfect ( love em. )

You really need to try before you buy especially Lundhags and there price because you may find them a bit cumbersome and tricky when negotiating rocky terrain as well.

I have the Ranger Highs, I went for my usual size 9 which lets me wear a liner sock and a thicker 400 or 600gsm Woolpower sock over that.

I do find them quite cold in snow and ice though, not sure if it's the the extensive rubber outer? I use their Beta Fit wool/synthetic insoles, I was toying with cutting some reflectix insoles out to try sometime.

am popping into nordic this weekend in Keswick, so can try a couple of pairs there. Am not worried about extreme cold, as i have my pack boots for that. it's more this infernal crossover weather, cold but still wet and muddy.
Thanks for all the advice.
