FYI:

For those who dont know, tonight there will be a total lunar eclipse, the first for 3 years.

The Moon will appear a shade of brown, coppery-red or orange, an effect that will be visible from all continents.

During the period of totality, from 10.24pm to 11.58pm, the Moon will only be illuminated by light filtered through the Earth's atmosphere.

The precise appearance depends on the amount of dust in the atmosphere: following the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1992, which released large amounts of volcanic ash, the eclipsed Moon was nearly invisible.

As the Earth has not had a major eruption for some years "we can expect an impressive sight", said Ian Morison of the University of Manchester's Jodrell Bank Observatory.

"If there were astronauts on the Moon looking at Earth during a total lunar eclipse they would see a black disc surrounded by a bright red ring. It is the light from this ring that we see reflected by the Moon's surface."

Such an eclipse described in the Bible as the Moon "turned to blood" helped scientists to fix the date of the Crucifixion as Friday, April 3, AD 33.

Also, saturn is visible, high in the sky and close to the moon, from about the one o-clock position. If the night sky is clear, the rings should be visible with decent binoculars.

Here's a screen shot from Cartes du Ciel, observing from 53N 2W at 22:30, showing the direction of the moon and the position of Saturn relative to it.

Lets hope the skies are clear tonight. :)

You can see saturn with the naked eye Leon, but I think it will just look like an eliptical blob. Your bins will not be good to use, they'll be like looking at ants through a straw, but you might get a better view if you can get them steady enough.

Thanks for the heads up Martyn, I had forgotten about this....
Leon.....You might just see the rings with 8x, but you will need to hold the bins real steady. Try to lean them against something.....

Saturn is visible now Leon, but the view will be better during the moons totality. For best views, get out into the country and away from the light pollution of the city.

I'm lookin out my bedroom window now every minute or so and its gradually disappearing. I went for a walk through the fields about an hour ago which was real nice, there was great illumination.

Corrrr. The moon's gone red. Looks fab through binoculars. Shame I can't get my camera to steady enough while aligning it through the binoculars.

Back home I note it is an eclipse.

I've been in work tonight, I work on a shipping terminal and was able to watch it all, the dark blood red tinge that became quite apparent was very strange - something to do with the red light in the spectrum refracting off the earths atmoshere which causes it! - I am now watching it reappear.

Good stuff - I'm 35yrs old and its the first one I've seen. Completely clear night - brilliant!
Not as good as watching the Return to Flight (STS - 121) shuttle launching last year though, that was completely AWESOME!!!

It looked pretty spectacular from here last night - weather was crystal clear. I've seen one before in 2004, I think, when I was in the US but it wasn't as good as this one.

Well that was the first lunar eclipse that I have ever seen, and I didn't know that it was going to happen. I was outside having a cigarette and thought cool the moons a funny colour

So I got my camera out and got these rather poor images, I totally misjudged how fast the earth spins and it was a bit windy so there is a bit of camera shake. Beautiful colour though

Watching this (and noticing how fast we are hurtling through space) made me feel somewhat small and insignificant. I have never really looked at the night sky and felt that way before. Truly something I will remember.

I think that must've been one of the best lunar eclipses we've seen in a long time. The skies were very clear. I bet jodrell bank got some good pictures.

Leon, did you see Saturn?

I could just make the rings out through my 8x42's.

The last lunar eclipse was 3 years ago, but was obscured over Britain by clooudy skies. The next to be seen over western Europe will take place on 21 February 2008, but in the middle of the night between 0300 GMT and 0400 GMT. That's only 11 months away.

Awesome! makes you wonder about how our ancestors would have responded.

500 years ago, Columbus used a lunar eclipse he knew was due, to strike fear into the minds of Carribean natives, securing food and respect for his expedition.

Good job there hadn't been a volcano prior to that or Columbus would of been in the cooking pot....
