we call them "thunder bugs" down here, they are infuriating!
my parents used to live in the "fens" (flat farming land near Ely), once the flies were particulaly bad, and aparently as a baby i was throwing up hundreds of them !

What a sight for your mom and dad, seeing you thowing up a bunch of those tiny flies. Good protein though.
