Had my daughters off school for Easter, and thought a nice wat to spend some time was set a tent up in the back garden and cook then dinner (sausage and beans) over a fire lit with a fire steel.
We collected tinder (long dry grass), a load of dead bindweed from the bushes, and got a pile of twigs.
Took a moment or two to get used to the firesteel, but after about 30 seconds, and just when I thought it wasn't going to catch, it did do.
got it going, put on the bind weed and twigs, but then it went out when put the bigger wood on again.
So tried again, after chopping the main wood smaller and making some feather sticks. And you know what, got it going again, and kept it going, and cooked the sausage and beans in a billy.
Kids loved it. I loved it.
Not the greatest achievement in the world, I know. But a great feeling to know I can do it.
