Hi Folks - Hope you do not mind my showcasing a blade finished today and also the stabilized wood we produce.

Please feel free to provide feedback and critique.

  • Made from 3mm 01 steel, blade is 215mm length (10 1/2"), handle 120mm (4 3/4") plus nut.
  • Blade grind has also been honed on water-stone's to ensure a completely linear grind and to remove initial layer of steel from the hardening process, then hand finished with fine paper.
  • This is a larger blade that also needs to cut bone so is Rc57/58 (less prone to chipping)
  • Handle is Black Horn / red liner / stabilized leather / red liner / stabilized birch.....Finished with bronze disk and brass dome nut onto threaded tang.
  • Handle cavity and above components were bonded with black high impact resin, I'll be suprised if it ever comes off
  • Wood finish....NONE .....the wood has just been sanded and machine buffed, with stabilization, needs no further treatment.
  • Blade will be matched to a suitable sheath when time permits.

The stabilized wood does not need a large end cap as it is sufficiently hardened from the stabilization process.

Enjoy
Tom

Hes stabilised some for me and some more is sat here in front of me packed up for posting to him tomorrow. It is very good quality, i have had no warpage or shrinkage from any he did for me. Definately recommended :)

Couple of pics of some elm burr stabilised by Tom ( emphasis on the handle :))

I like that alot fella!
Is that the antler you picked up in Norway in the back-drop?
My best.
Chris.

Hi Chris - Certainly is :)
I'm also in the process of getting a little bit more :)

I've been working quietly on the other idea we had too (The 22)
Was thinking of leveraging it to raise funds for a worthy cause....watch this space, I'll post soon.

Cracking work, great materials too! A splendid looking example of a Leuku.

Forgive me but 215mm is nearer 8 1/2"

I do find I use the blade very close to the handle even on a knife this size - for controlled whittling etc. Does a lack of any ricasso give you the heebies? I guess one can still choke up around the ricasso to similar effect...

All the best.
