I think there are a few leatherworkers on here so I thought I would check in here witha few questions about some leather products I have.

So I have two differently sourced Travellers Notebook clone covers, a leather pen roll, a custom made wallet and a key holder. The last two were from a NE maker and are very nice, smooth surfaced and also smooth on the inside. The pen rollis smooth on the outer and has a finish to some depth in it. The other side is slightly rough not smoorth like the key holder and wallet. The two TN covers are kind of smooth on the dressed outer face but are very rough on the inner face, especially one of them. We are talking furry it is that rough. These covers have been storeed with inserts for some time and the inner leather has flattened where the inserts pressed against it.

My question is am I right in thinking the rough inner of the TN clone covers is because it is a split leather and possibly the inner split with a coating to fake the surface of full grain?

The manufacturer of the wallet and key holder uses full grain or at least the top grain leather. The key holder is very thick leather so has to be full grain The wallet is thick leather (not as thcik as thee key holder) and could be a thinnish full grain or a top grain from a thicker full grain split. The tool roll is thick and I think the facti is it not "furry" means it is full grain. The covers are split leather and it could even be the split side not the top grain because it is very rough on one side.

Does this sound right?

A secondary question is, what can be done about the covers "furriness"?? Would treating it with something on the outer, inner or both faces help with the loose fibres in the covers? Or is it not worth bothering? Or even cutting it off somehow?

Oh BTW the really nice wallet I had made (I think oak tanned leather and very smooth and shiny) I managed to put a deep scratch into it. I know some call it patina but with it being a month or so old well I do not like the scratch. Is there anything to be done?

T' Intarwebs will provide all the information you need, and then some.

Most leather supply companies publish articles about the different kinds of leather that they sell.

Here's one for starters.

Then there are a gazillion fascinating videos on YouTube made by leather workers. Corter is great. Even if you have no desire to make things yourself, it is interesting (well, I find it so) to see the amount of work and care that goes into making an object.

Who made the tn covers ? I used to make them in the north east
Amazon cheapos to test whether I could use them. Never got into them but revisiting the idea now. The northeast leather products were a wallet and a key holder (thick leather loop joined with a brass screw pin detail. Not sure I can mention the maker here but hne is good IMHO. I love what I got from him.

The leather with the "furry" inner surface could be belly leather, which tends to be looser texture.
A suggestion to get it smooth could be to try applying a burnishing gum such as tragacanth or tokenole. Apply a thin layer then burnish with a smooth piece of bone or antler.
