Hat band or head band - you choose. I made one (see last pic) for my own hat but I've made a couple for people who wear them as head/hair bands. (One person added feathers to the knotted ends...)

I made one for my own tarp hat. Sewed it on with a couple of stitches of linen thread at four or five locations around the hat:
(Slight variation on this one - the adjuster is round and the decorative knot work is on the back.)
