Hi.

You people are a bit more technical than i am. I am looking for a suppiler of a reasonable priced Laptop. My current pc is on its last legs. I don't really want to give PC world my money. The laptop doesn't have to be all singing all dancing just able to play DVDs and access the internet. No use if i cant get to BCUK.

Cheers,

Try Dell they are decent computers and there seem to be some deals on at the moment.

I've bought from them before and the service is good as well. If you are self employed they do good business prices.

Try the classifieds section of your local paper, make sure they show you it running and everything before you buy it though. You could also always try ebay...

Or if you arn't wanting the lastest and greatest www.morgancomputers.co.uk is the place for you.
Loads of last years models, end of lines and factory refurbs (died and replaced under warranty, rebuilt and resold with warranty) and a good company to deal with, I've been using them 10yrs plus
Cheers
David

IMHO PC World and other big chains do not offer the best prices and don't always have the best competitive practises.

Although I have no evidence that PC world acts in anything less that the very best ethics.

My own views that do not reflect those of this site. In case the vultures are watching. (Lawyers)

Ok, with a budget of £1000 pounds you can afford to shop around a lot and really get exactly what you want.

I would spend a lot less than that if I could get a machine that will do the job...

Sony Vaio K195HP
5062

Designed for business use instead of home use, the Sony Vaio K195HP is enabled for fast wireless 11g network connection. It also has Microsoft Windows XP Professional, which provides secure networking.

Intel Pentium M 2.8GHz processor
512MB DDR
40GB hard drive
CD-RW/DVD combo
15" XGA Screen "X-black"
ATI RADEON IGP 345M graphics chip
56k V.92 modem
Wireless LAN 802.11b/g & Wired 10/100 LAN
Microsoft Windows XP Professional edition

£899. 00 inc vat
----------------------------------------------------

The above is from www.laptopsdirect.co.uk under "Ex Demo" on the left hand menu... a few points about this is that the X-Black screen on the Sony is the best quality picture I have ever seen on a laptop... ever! (if you pop into a PC world/dixons, see what I mean). Also Sony laptops while normally not at the most cutting edge are usually very high quality.

Most laptops come with Windows XP home which, quite frankly sucks next to Pro which this comes with. As long as the disk space is enough for your needs this would be my recommendation :-)

Can I ask why you don't want to buy it from PC world?
Because from there you'll pay £1500 - £2000 for a PC worth well under a grand.

If you have a grand then what about a Mac (he hears the sharp intake of breath from the rest of the forum). I am going to get a powerbook soon and they are the...... in fact they are much better than sliced bread. The compatability with windows is good now you have OSX. I know most people think they are so different to windows you won't know what to do or that they are posers computers but I think they are genuinely the best there is.

If you want a laptop that:

1. Reliable ( runs on UNIX kernel. Just works)

2. Tough ( polycarbonate plastic - same material used for bullet proof glass, and magnesium frame)

3. Practical ( Easy to set up, all standard GUI ready to go)

4. Safe (few viruses, good safety out of the box)

5. Looks Great ;-) Great product design.

6. Light (12.1 inch iBook G4 only 2.2kg/ 4.9lbs. only 3.42cm/ 1.35" thick)

7. Great user friendly operating system and apps.

8. Affordable (starts at £799 inc. VAT)

Then check out the Apple iBook G4

Seriously, whatever pre-conceptions you may have do check them out. They really are great to use, really reliable and the Mac OS X is a great user interface over a solid unix based OS. The best of both words. Viruses, what viruses :-)

Yep yep i know it is alot more expensive than most places but I was just wondering if he meant he has had some bad business experiences with them before as they have always appeared as devoted, professional salesman when I have dealt with them.
