I think it's unlikely it was cast. It's not cost effective. I do think it's made of monkey metal though. Even an old leaf spring can fracture due to work hardening.

Could be a few things. Tang temper not softened back, tang shoulders not radiused into the blade, crack from forging that went unnoticed.
