Hi all

I was thinking about trying to carve a kuksa. I know nothing about wood, I rarely get chance to get out in the woods (dark nights drawing in) to look for anything. I do however seem to spend half my life these days wondering around diy stores!

Would any of the woods that are sold in wickes or B&Q be suitable? If so what size and what am I looking for?

I know it isn't very bushcrafty going to B&Q but needs must.
Any advice welcome.

i bet you could carve a kuksa from some b&Q wood but it will be hard to carve being as its seasoned wood.

Dont wory about the fact that the wood has come from a DIY store, wood is wood at the end of the day, its all the same!

Make sure you dont get any wood that has been preserved in any way because the chemicals will seep out into whatever you are drinking.

By the way, heres that tutorial i made, you may find it handy http://www.bushcraft.ridgeonnet.com/Kuksa%20tutorial.htm

I will pick some wood up and see how I get on. Thanks Jon R, that looks fantastic. I won't be able to get mine up to your standard but that is very helpful. I'll let you know how I get on with it.

You don't have a location where you are from DP1? I'm just finishing a Kuksa made from some wood I sawed from a recently felled birch tree near Horspath in Oxford if that's any good to you. The wood was really fresh and green and still will be as I only picked it up a few days ago.
