Kuksa ( Birch Burr ).

This is my second burr kuksa, a little more rustic this time.

After first removing the outer bark and deeper hollows with a hatchet I then changed the original shape of the burr very little. I was aiming to achieve the look of these kuksas I found on a web site, not quite happy with the results though  :

The handle and bowl are a bit squint but it's surprisingly comfortable to hold.

The cup is finished with walnut oil, I'm going to rub some bees wax on as well.

Thanks for looking.
Cheers, Pete.

Nice job. I like the way the form is natural by letting the burr itself sudgest the shape you ended up with.
LOL I was very envious today, I came across an alder tree next to a ditch somewhere with about 6 or 7 burrs on it, the largestabout the size of hallf a melon.

I like it! To me, it looks like what someone living in the area (where kuksas are from) would use. Like the kuksa they carved when they were younger and continue to use...

EDIT: read it over and thought I'd better reword a few things... I didn't mean it looks like a kid made it but just that it looks... Real! Like the kind of thing someone would actually use for every drink they have in their life.

Thanks for the comments guys :) .

Pete
That is beautiful. Where did you get the birch burr from, have you got any spare ;)

Nice one mate
Craeg:)
Hi Craeg,
I got the burr from one of two trees felled last year and destined for the fire wood pile  .
I saved it and added it to my wood pile ;) .
Got one large one left and a little burr elm I hope to use on a knife handle eventually.

Cheers, Pete.

Classy! Did you do all of the hollowing with a spoon knife? I find mine hard work to use.

Hi philaw.

I had a go at making my own spoon knives following this tutorial, I think cariboo is also a member here.

Mine are far from ideal but they seem to work OK, don't think I got the tempering right though having said that they haven't broken or bent ... yet  :D .

Cheers, Pete.

I'm amazed by people that can make knives from scratch. I can't even properly sharpen the ones I've bought! The kuksa is quality work.
