I am a newby when it comes to understanding the different advantages and disadvantages to the different types of knifes. For example what are the reasons for a drop point, spear point, clip point, tanto point knives??

Are some better for skining, carving etc or is it down to asthetics and personal taste??

I was hoping to find answers to this in FAQ

Thanks

Jamie

Yes that's where the differences lie.
If you would use an americanized tanto to skin you would notice that the shape will tend to make the knive go deeper and deeper and damage the meat, entrails etc. But maybe it could still work with a droppoint tanto  myself now

This wikipedia article has some useful diagrams and definitions of blade shapes and uses.

I asked this about a month ago and we didn't really get many definite answers. Try searching for a "blade shapes" thread or something similar
