Interesting, what do you think would've been the reasons they fell out of use? Ceramic sharpeners? The increased popularity of better stainless steels?

Just thinking off the top of my head, isn't quartz great for improv jungle grit? There is tons of that available throughout this land!

Wonderful Sean! Nicely done video and I appreciate the information. Never heard of these before but it is a wonderful "slice" of history. :)

Something similar is done with hones from Flexcut, which are made simply of wood and shaped to gouges and V tools. You just smear on some sharpening compound like Flexcut Gold and strop. They work very very well for small gouges and V tools.
