Well we never got too far from home this summer but my wife and I managed to take most of the month of july off work ..just
poking around lake to lake, catching some fish for dinner and falling to sleep in the tent listening to the frogs. It was a hot humid month,
humidex in the forties a couple times, perfect swimming weather...not so perfect portaging weather (drenched in sweat a few times).
I have a bunch of random pics:

Way to go, this highlights the distinct difference in outdoor persuits from Canada, to the UK.

If my wife stripped to the waist every time we went out, I'd be dragging her out every weekend, quickly followed by getting arrested for indecent exposure.

Oh for a taste of the real wilderness.

Kudos to you both.

I just had to add, that's a great idea with the barrels by the way, was the harness a custom?. Don't the barrels weigh a lot in themselves already? I'm not surprised you overheated carrying them around.

your house!
Have to say thank you for your pics with paddles shown side on too, you have no idea how hard it is to find the view to get an idea of how thin the blade should be, many thanks dude!

You can buy the barrels complete with harness at any outdoor outfitter; the barrels are plastic and quite light when empty. Ours is a 60 liter, but for shorter trips
they also make a 30 liter. The harness is surprisingly comfortable, the canoe is more of a bother to carry.

I think, depending upon type of wood, most are thinner than mine. I buy a cheap pine paddle, bang the heck out of it for a couple years, then buy another cheap paddle!

And good luck with your paddle building...
