In these Video's he is 5 or 6 ( It was just before we started Scouts ) The Knife that he used the most was one that I made him and it was Blunt and not sharp at all except for the spine to use on a Fero Rod. When he did use a Knife that was sharp I was right there but we practiced a lot and I told him how important it was to be safe.
My personal Opinion but if you make a big deal about it without Instructions or purpose they become afraid and I wanted him to Know I trusted him with a Knife and that helped build his confidence ( yes he has cut himself since then but I've cut myself more than he has lol ).
Since this set of skills I have made him 10 or so knives and he has gotten better with them, scouts teach the Blood Circle and I teach him much more than that, I think kids should learn as early as possible about Knives and the Importance of Safety and respecting how they are used but that is up to each individual to decide when they want to teach to their children, we have 11 year old scouts I don't trust with a spoon.

He just finished the 3rd set of skills and we are posting them on the Georgia woodsman page on FB, my suggestion is that if you can find a butter Knife or any cheap knife put it on a grinder and grind the point off and the blade dull and use that to teach them.

My grandpa got me a little folding pocket knife when I was about 7 I think.
I was about that age when I was given an Old Timer Knife, used it a lot and one day I forgot to take it out of my pocket and it went to school with me, of course I showed it to my friends and one of em ratted me out. They took it from me then I got a paddling cause my ex friend got a busted nose lol.

Great stuff, thanks for sharing mate, you've got To be proud! The more kids out in nature the better!
Thank you, We started doing this before we joined scouts and was the first set of skills I did with him. We joined and then I came up with 2 more sets of skills and we do them with scouts.
