Importing fixed blades into Ireland

Hi all-

Perhaps if there are any irish forumites reading this, they can tell me if there are any pitfalls I should be aware of as regards customs if I want to import a few fixed blades from the US?

In the past I have had no problem on one or two occassions with folders marked as 'cutlery', but those were smallish packages. This time there will be a few items, more money is involved, and the fixed blades would probably be regarded as 'tactical' in terms of their design, although they are all relatively small.

AFAIK any fixed blades are quite legal to own, if not to carry, in Ireland, irrespective of size or design. However, I was wondering if anyone has any experience of customs in this regard?

Ha! Ironically, they sent me over here after I asked on there....

I think I'll bite the bullet and just send an e-mail to our customs guys asking for clarification on what the situation is (probably what I should have done in the first place).

I have sent a lot of sharp things to Ireland, and have not had any problems, but check with your local customs.

I called customs today, and the consensus of the phone operator and her supervisor were that the only items which are clearly prohibited from importation are those you might imagine : automatic knives, knuckle dusters, knuckle knives, push knives (and any other weapons clearly named under Irish law, including many obscure items).

So technically speaking, most conventional knife patterns shouldn't be a problem.

I'd still wonder what the reaction would be to customs should they open a package containing a very aggressively-styled tactical knife ... but .... :-?

Is there an online resource for government acts and so on?

I'm familiar with most of the british acts and the prohibitions sound similar. Providing your import isn't in direct contradiction of an outright banned or prohibited item, it doesnt matter what it looks like, or how the customs guy feels about it. If it's legal, it's legal!

www.irishstatutebook.ie is the website I found when looking up detail after reading the articule on Knives and Law here on BCUK.

The laws seems almost identical as the UK as is the case with alot of them.

Hi lads!,
I live in Munster and have never had a bother with my imports!
Last gear I got was a pair of Kobun Tanto blades from Cold Steel, one was a pressie for a friend!Have carried a 12" Kukri back from Prague in my bag cause I love those big blades for camping!No bother putting it in my bag and stowing it in the hold of the plane,September 2003 just gone.
Have brought in Norse Axe from Cold Steel, various staffs from UK and USA, and a world of gear from Heinnie!
Only probs lately is that all US parcels valued over 100 euro are charged duty and inspected by customs now! My Kobuns cost me $88 including postage and a further 40 euro in import duty,VAT and customs clearance! I'll be buying more from the UK from now on! Even though they are dear, the duty evens it up and you get your stuff usually same week from Hennie Haynes!

you wont have a problem m8.you,ll just need to pay the duty but im sure it,ll be cheaper anyway. you,ll be surprised what you can get[ or maybe you wont]lol. im not.but then im naughty arnt i!
