Identification of axe head?

This axe head has been knocking around in a tool box for years.

The edge is completely dull. Like its been used for pounding stone.

Is it some sort of stonemasons/builders axe/hatchet? Its got a very small eye.

Is it worth grinding and rehandling it? What could I use it for?

It'd be rude not too Dave, if you don't like it as an axe then grind it to a point and make a pick-axe type jobby from it.

Yes, I suppose so. Its a wierd looking thing and I was curious as to its original purpose?

it looks to me that is an axe made by a smith because he needed/was asked for/fancied having a go at making one. The eye is the same shape and size as I/he would use for top tools and hammers. If the blade were narrower then I would say it is a metalworking or stone working tool, but it doesn't look right for that to me

Dave, what you have there looks remarkably like a Wheel Rights axe that they use for shaping spokes! It does look as if its been made as a one off, as there are no lugs and the cheeks are the same width as the poll, it might also explain the small diameter of the eye as it was made to fit the only handle he (or she) had going! It might be worth putting a decent edge on beastie and seeing how it fairs. failing that you could always sell it at the WG!
