I think they're called try sticks...

Does anyone have a picture and/or a description of these things? They're a length of wood, maybe 1" in diameter, on which you practise a variety of different cuts that are commonly used in bushcraft. I have heard that when BCUK had a magazine, there was an article on them in an early issue; I seem to remember that there was something similar in an early issue of "Bushcraft and Survival Skills" too - but I'm not 100% sure.

Anyway, I'm trying to get some of my pupils at school to make a 'try stick' (right name?) and would really appreciate it if someone could post an example/picture/article or give me a link to make the exercise just that bit better for the kids.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can give!

This is one I made some time back...
IIRC the magazine may still be available as a download, but you may need to check with the mods....

Thank you all for all this. I will try Kepis's blog when I get home as the school system blocks access to the blogosphere and see if I can't (a) have a go myself and (b) work out a simplified version for the pupils to try out.
