went out last night and lite up half the school field, the beam from the torch reminded me of the Bat light.

The Romisen RC-A5 http://www.dealextreme.com/p/romisen-rc-a5-q5-cree-q5-wc-3-mode-180-lumen-led-flashlight-black-1-aa-1-16340-32948 is very similar. I must admit I've found Romisen's to be really good quality (one of them went through the washing machine and is still working), with well-cut threads and o-rings.

The only thing that slightly put me off these torches is the bit at the front, which looks a bit sharp!

Can someone just explain to me what's the reason for needing such a bright torch? Surely unless you are doing search and rescue, it's just going to ruin your night vision around camp?

I tend to use a headlamp when bushcrafting and use a bright torch when walking home from the pub. Woods are very dark at night and if your travelling through them, not camping in them, a decent torch is a distinct advantage.
