Just measured mine.
Major axis 112mm.
Minor axis 78mm.
Depth 18mm.
The lens protrudes 5mm with a dia of 36mm.
The lens cover is a friction fit.
Metal thickness is about 0.5mm.

Thank you very much. I have a couple of lenses somewhere, not sure that I have a big enough piece of brass in that thickness, but that would be a good excuse to go and visit Metals R Us for the first time in years.

I can see why you’d want the traditional tool, it’s clearly iconic.
On the other hand that video impressed me. I think I’m going to make up a tobacco tin version. I can buy a x6 lens for about a fiver. My tobacco tin has a tiny hole in it so I can make char-cotton.
I don’t need this kit but the guy in the video was making fire with lens and flint faster that I can do it with a ferro rod and I beat myself up if I take more than two pulls on the ferro!!
It looked as if fire was jumping from his finger tips as the tinder on the table caught stray sparks.

I love these old "forgotten" videos from the old YouTube that existed without YouTubers.
One left here but pricey, I use a lens from a old pair of binoculars that were broken, just screwed it off I should have taken the threaded part off too and seen if I could attach it to a tin but didn’t think of it till I read this thread
in this case i'd be curious about a tutorial... brass (probably) won't work well in "my" obscene tropical humidity, but aluminium or stainless steel should do for a tinderbox (without the lens in the lid)...
