Made a small one with my old man a few months back.
Your are better putting the fulcrum nearer the blade as it will multiply the tension on the blade but that then reduces the size of log you can cut unless you make the uprights really big.
I never need to cut big bits of wood so prefer the laplander but the are fun to make.

I've had a few goes at making one in the field, with limited success. If anyone has experience of making one from scratch in the woods, i'd be interested to hear how you got on.

Do you need to get a particular type of saw blade so that you can roll it up to put inside a billy can etc?
I casually asked someone about this some time ago and was told that you couldn't roll the blades up as they would snap (and so have never tried it myself)

in my experiance bow saw blades are all pretty flexible but i dont like by expansive replacement blades so maybe you need to get cheap ones, as for snapping theyonly really snap if you try to fold them, if your only curving it you should be alrigh
i was in home base the other day though, and they had a folding saw type of thing, but it was a handle that you bolt different blades to and came with a long thin blade that was slightly longer than a laplander but otherwise very similar, a hacksaw blade and a third blade that looked nearly twice the length of the laplander and shaped more like a normal wood saw, it was 16 pounds and seems perfect for a backpack because it would pack down to just over a foot in length for storage but then give you the extra cutting depth, just wondering if anyone else has seen this

Depends on the size of billy can I suppose, your bow saw blade will fit in a zebra type can quite happily, be careful getting it out though!
I have made simple ones by using a piece of bent hazel, easy enough and they worked well.
There was a really nice set of plans available from a member here for a very neat folding saw I will try and find that post.

PS - as regards the actual article - I think there is loads of good stuff on the PK blog but this one is out of my league
You could give this one a go dude, very simple but effective, I really like the how to on Paul's site, very good walk through and I reckon yu could make do with less machinery for as good a polished result,

Chris, I'll show you how to make a buck saw from wood like Kepis when we're at RC.
It's a lot more simple than you think
Just bring a saw blade, some para cord and a couple small bolts and nuts or key rings with you

Mine was similar, and i did manage to cut some wood, but i had difficulty keeping the tension.

I tried making a folding one before, was actually my first bushcrafty carving/creation project besides spoons and hobo stove. Looked good, got good tension, but i had managed to saw the slot for the blade squint and ended up with a slight twist in the blade so it wouldnt cut for peanuts! Live and learn, maybe its time for mark 2.....
