i hold up a bit of paper vertically and try and shave bits off the side. a sharp knife usually performs well

i'm also with Jon though, playing with them usually works!

  • slicing newspaper
  • shaving a single letter off a sheet of news paper without cutting all the way through to the other side.
  • I have a piece of seasoned ash that I try all my whittling edges on.
  • slicing pieces of manila rope into 1/4 inch bits to test bite and edge holding
  • slicing card board, same as above, but not as effective.

Now that's quite a challenge Chris.
Something worth working towards to know a real sharp edge.

I use the arm hair test and paper test too. Carefull with that arm test though - I once did a particularly good job at sharpening and managed to shave a layer of skin off a tiny bit and didn't notice until SHWMBO saw me bleeding....

I used to shave arm hair but everyone laughed at me when I wore short sleeves due to bold patches, so now I shave the tops of my legs where only SWMBO sees

And also the thumb nail test if I can't take off my trousers.

Yeah arm shaving does look as if you have been involved with some sort of invasive procedure/ medical experiment!
Tissue and rizzlas is my goal as I dont think I need anything sharper ( got a scalpel for that)

OMG's!!

The idea of having to take off your trousers to test your blades sharpness puts me in mind of male nudists frying sausages!!!
