Not quite sure if it grows on S/Birch, as the name suggests looks like a Horses Hoof

That is most likely to be Birch Polypore (Piptoporous betulinus), the Hoof Fungus is (Fomes fomentarius) and usally grows on large deciduous trees like Beech.

In Scotland most Fomes fomentaria appears on Birch. Not exclusively, but usually. Birch seems to host both F.f. and Piptoporus betullina.

P. b. also holds an ember though, makes a good 'elastoplast', etc.
