A few weeks ago I made up a high tech bearing block which uses a sealed skateboard bearing embedded in a stacked leather disk. This past week I got out to the jungle and shot a video of it in action. It resulted in a personal record coal for me, about 17 seconds, so that worked out really well.

I was able to find a few meters of chainsaw pull cord at a local equipment rental repair shop. The cord is exceptionally strong and has virtually no stretch. Combined with the bearing block it really makes the bowdrill fun.

Great video - nice to see someone who bothers editing! I still haven't made fire from friction yet but I'll get there...
