Hi there been looking at all the great posts on here and thought I'd have a go at making a knife myself out of an old file, talking with a lad at work and he wants to have a go too!

So I built this forge so that I can soften the files

There now cooling off (still in the ashes)

I have come up with two only very slightly different designs and just trying to work out which one now!

purely my choice but i like the look of the bottom one best, looks like it could be really comfy and has traits of the spyderco bushy handle. looking forward to seeing this develope.

That looks like a great blade, James. Are you sure you want to erase the filemarks? It's part of that bit of metal's history. I think they look good personally, but of course, it's your call! You don't have to listen to me rabitting on:) Good job anyway. Looking forward to the end result. And welcome.

Looking good there mate. What did you use to cut the shape out and grind the edge?

I really should get on and progress with my knife but cutting it with a dremel is a SLOOOWWW process

cut the basic shape out of the blank with an angle grinder then used a bench grinder and files to get the shape/angle! to smooth out the files marks used the angle grinder files and wet and dry paper!

Handle is now done did a little bit of sharpening on the blade but needed to get the handle vanished! had to clamp the knife to my computer table in the house ans its that cold in the workshop the varnish would never dry! The wood for the handle is sooooo hard its daft, had to use a rough as hell rasp on it then clean up the marks it left with 40 grit sand paper and its smooth!

Your knife looks fantastic - I particularly like the wood you've used for the handle. It's amazing to see what you can achieve when you're, as you say, 'new to this'. Really well done!
