I'm sure most of us do this but I feel its worth a thread, as we all know there are lots of old folks who die a this time of year due to many reasons so I feel that if your able you should chap on there door and offer to help out in some way.some can't afford to use there heating, can't get out to do any shopping or are have no family and are alone.Obviously its weird to chap on someones door and ask them if they need help and most are a bit stand offish which is good because I've met some who are happy to let me in there home and give me money etc obviously I don't do this.I don't work for a charity, just a guy, I usually as If they need help with there shopping( its not uncommon for them to give you money for it straight away, don't take it!) i get a list buy it from my own money and get my money back after giving them the reciept to show im not conning themI help out four folk(2 men and two women) the benifits are great one women is teaching me to knit, one guy who is 94 has taught me to fish, this guy was a keen fisherman but for the past 20 years has been unable to go far, so i drive him out and now i have learned a great deal from him, all older folks are cool, they have skills and knowledge from a lot of years to tell and they bake you stuff :).All 4 of them try to give me stuff, I suppose its a thing from that generation but don't take it unless its a couple of cakes, where you have to lol.Anyway please check on older folks at this time of year we will all be old at some point

I regularly take an old Polish guy who fought in the 2nd world war shopping and trips to the docs, my mates missus is Polish and she cooks up extra Polish meals and freezes them for him. Over a bottle of vodka and potato chees dumplings he opens up and the stories of fleeing the blitzkrieg and ending up in Palestine, Monte Casino, and a bear they had as a mascot, not sure about the bear could be the vodka. The humblest man I've ever met, always thankful.
on a bum note I tried to help an old lady cross the road and got told to fornicate with myself,

Yes, unfortnately some of the rudest folks are old.

But good on you, Nilhilist for helping out.

While you are at it, spare a thought for the old (and young) who will be on their own for christmas.

if you know anybody like this, ask them to dinner with you, as my family always do.

(some of them `want` to be on their own, of course, but theres no harm in asking.)

well said

I used to treat hearing loss so met a lot of mainly older folks, always interesting and always have something to teach

I make a point of telling my kids to search out the more 'experienced' (read older!) amongst the workforce to learn the old tips and tricks, unfortunately a lot of knowledge gets lost as nobody asks
