Have a look at this to see the technique you should have been using. Watch a few other videos just to get the idea of maintaing the angle when sharpening the video linked is not the only one worth watching just a start

so.. did you get this knife cleaned up??

it may have alot of cosmetic marks but I have a feeling getting that edge back to usbale and sharp wouldn't take too long with the right kit.
