head torch and keychain lantern

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I'm in the market to upgrade my headtorch
Got a few criteria to fill if folk can help me?
1 double A or triple A battery powered. Nowt obscure.
2 a selection of light strength. Something like low medium and visible from space would be good.
3 cree bulb
4 a red light setting would be good too.
5 not too expensive

Also I saw somewhere a wee LED lantern that looks most handy for a little pitch marker and for casting a bit o light when I cant be bothered to lug candles or oil lanterns.

What do you recommend folks?

Alpkit .. Gamma

Have to say the gamma is superb even though i dont own one. Ive seen them and the smiles their owners wear.

In terms of pitch marker DX do a nice AAA glo-toob for £11

Green be brightest but they have a coupe of settings. I have the amber and battery life is excellent on low and none to shabby on high

Cheaper ideas available like the tesco rolson tubes for £1.50 but build quality and battery changing is an issue

LED head torches are cheap as chips from loads of suppliers. I use my <£5 headtorch mostly to keep pee off my crocs/watch where I dig on a mid night toilet run but torches are so cheap just buy two or three for under £20 and have a play....ain't rocket science.

Knives and torches............... who'd have thought the snobbery they would now attract thirty or forty years ago lol. Life never fails to amaze me.

I have a Petzyl Tikka. Its good but if I ever needed another head torch I'd buy the gamma.

Cheers Paul.
Reckon it'll be the Gamma
The lantern thingy I think was teepee that I saw with it?

Just got one of these in the post for my nephew. Looks like a great bit of kit. Maybe Santa isn't coming this year after all..
I have the tikka plus 2. Its a bit slimmer no where near as bright or as many options.

Another vote for the Gamma and Glo-Toob combo. Get the white Glo-Toob though, it'll give you a better light for general purpose. Green being brighter only applies to Tritium tubes, of which green is by far the brightest.

I sold my Glo-Toob though. It's designed as a 360 degree marker light, originally marketed at divers (hence all the different colours). It means it can be quite blinding unless you shield it with a hand or tape. Mine was quite a big CR123A version, I might try the AAA sometime.

And filmed through the bottom of a beer glass by the looks of it, even his T-shirt is multicam!

The Gamma looks value for money and with good functions.

I'd say a Photon Freedom is a good secondary, camp marker and camp area light. It weighs nothing, costs £10, batteries last a long time and you can carry loads of spare batteries as they use CR2032 or CR2016, it can sit on your keyring so you can always have it on you and it has great functions such as dimmable up and down, SOS, slow medium fast strobe. The 360 clip is great for clipping it to your hat, hammock, tent, bag, whatever and it has a clip lanyard too. I wouldn't be without mine and I prefer it to a headtorch around camp as it is so lightweight that you don't know you are wearing it and it can be aimed down so as not to dazzle others, perfect.
