i think if you wear it so the blade is on the outside of your boot the chance of injuring yourself would be pretty slim, but still not the safest sheath i've ever seen.

Weird, ain't seen a sheath like that before. Do the tabs at the bottom have snaps or are they just rivets? Does the stitching look pro or amateur? Given how uncovered the blade is it looks to me like it may be a matter of making do with leather scraps, but I could of course be wrong - on the other hand, it might simply be for someone who's using the knife fairly constantly, and only needs somewhere to safely pop it when they need to do something else, rather than somewhere to safely stow the knife for longer periods. Another thought, perhaps it's modified from the frog for a seperate sheath and knife. Interesting find though!

It is an ankle/forearm sheath. The training FS knives has a rounded ball on the tip to prevent injury during training, so the end cap was ommitted from the training sheaths as steel/metal was in short supply during the war. The actual sheaths used on the sharp 'field' FS knives had a steel end cap to protect the tip and prevent injury.

I think the tabs were for another strap, now missing.

It probably was for a good thick boot or leather gaiters.

the handle is held on by a bit of elastic, now mostly gone.

Here is another variation...

I'd say that yours is one of the early pattern versions for the cut down combat knife, and is either the training model for the blunted knife, or that the cap has come off over the years. Those tabs on the bottom came like that as standard to allow the user to sew or attach a retaining systen suitable for their own purposes or method of carry.

those FS knives look so nice! i want one but have absolutly no use for it lol

Yep, thats the one!

And mine on closer inspection `does` seem to have lost its tip.

I think the knife is an aftermarket product though.
