Car camper conversion kit

You can make something like that for yourself, and if you do at least you can guarantee that it will fit your car.
Perhaps - if there are plans out there that might cover the rookie design errors and which might be possible to have cut out of ply using a CNC machine. There is (was?) a site once which had all sorts of these plans available, a thingyverse for cnc and plywood, must search around.

wonder if a carpenter could make something bespoke for you-mind you,it would probably be more expensive than buying that kit?

Gimmick.

That table and chairs look flimsy.

And I cannot see how you can get two people into the boot of a car.

I was in my boot last summer, I had to sleep at an angle and it was not comfy. Not ideal....even if I had been able to open the boot from the inside.

depends on the size of the car and the people, though that thought has stuck me.
I did once a tour round Europe by car, worked ok - but it was just me and my bike, which remained in the car as I slept. Wasn’t for a long tour, I had a tent as well.
I like the idea behind but similarly harbour doubts.
Some estate cars are def long enough to sleep in, just the shuffling in and out in the middle of the night for a pish might be awkward. Still a hell of a lot cheaper than a camper van.

Does it need to fit on a plane or even in the back?

Sure you’re aware of roof tents but I see them being used quite often, they’re really good. One example below but plenty more on the site. Side awning makes a nice addition and they offer some decent discounts for bundles.

I would have thought you could have a similar effect with normal camping kit or stuff designed for the home for less money - all though it wont be as neat...
If it's a single person the bed area can be a camping mat on a piece of ply. camp chair and table stored next to it in the boot along with the cooker etc.
Make or buy a small storage/ cooking box etc.
Try it out a few times and adjust and refine to suit you.
I've slept in the back of my car using a low slung camp bed (the ones that are just off the floor) with the back seats folded down. It was OK for the odd night but couldn't quite sit upright.
The worst bit was getting in and out as the boot doesn't open from the inside.

I just sling a roll mat down in the car - I'm doing it tonight in advance of an event early tomorrow. Kit in crates to the side works fine. I can see something like that being a good idea for two people though.

Am not that fussed on roof tents to be honest. I could see a use for them on safari so one’s tender parts are more out of reach of creeping bitey things, but there’s some thing about them I find impractical. Have seen one mounted on top of a teardrop trailer which was interesting.

Quite probably, and might not end up being as elegant as some of these kits.
Does make me think that having the plans, plywood, space and a jigsaw could work out.
