i realy want a tipi for this winter but all my moneys going towards moving house, well most of it. so i dont really fancy spending hundreds on a tentipi for example.
i was wondering if anyone has made one as the design is fairly simple if you no wot i meen.
or has anyone a similer tent suitable for a stove?
cheers

I've made a real tipi (as in Crow Indian design). The tipi design is not very good in rainly weather, but quite nice under most other conditions. Followed Laubin & Laubins instructions, no real tricks to it (if you are used to sewing large amounts of canvas...)

i'm off camping this weekend in my argos tipi, when i get home i'll be taking it to pieces and using it to make a pattern. once the pattern's sorted you'd be more than welcome to have a copy, i imagine it'll be a simple case of making lots of triangles and sewing them together. i intend to spend quite a bit of time this weekend working out the details so the "lots of triangles and sewing them together" idea will be gone by monday but i will have a fairly good idea of what is actually involved. if i can help at all let me know

cheers

i think i'll probably use polycotton but i'm not sure yet.
the size of my argos tipi is 3.6m across and 2m tall - i think it's listed as a 4 man but once you've got the woodburner in there and all your kit i'd say it's a good size for two.
i'll certainly be designing it for use with a stove (home made) i've had a couple of nights in my argos one with the stove burning and it's warmer than my bedroom at home - the only thing wrong with the argos ones is the fact that they're made of polyester so really don't like sparks and the level of finish is poor to say the least, the design is pretty good i think.

i'll try and get in touch one day next week once i've got some idea of what i'm doing but if i don't then feel free to PM me and ask, i have a memory like a sieve.

I'm told that it matters how each panel is cut relative to the weave - get it wrong and the tipi leaks. Sorry not much use but perhaps a useful watch out

NS

that makes sense, you'd want to cut all the panels so that the weave is going in the same direction ortherwise they're going to stretch differently and i guess that could lead to leaks. i.e weft (or warp) fibres should make as perfect a circle as possible around the perimeter of the tipi. does that make sense?

that fabric sounds good mate just have to see how much it would cost to do a whole tipi.
iv looked at the polish laavu but theres alot of mixed views on them iv not managed to find a pic of one with a stove in it, also not sure if it would be bi enough for me two dogs and kit and a firebox. have u used one mate?

i use the polish army one and like it alot but i dont use a stove in it as normally i have my 3 year old lad in it too. But there was a chap on here with pics of one with a stove in it it but if youve got 2 dogs i think it may be a bit cramped and or dangerous with a firebox

theres a pic on this thread with a stove in one
