......honing their blade on the edge of a car window? I know good 'ole Ray demonstrated this a long time back but at that time I was hopeless at basic sharpening, nevermind this 'advanced' stuff. But since seeing Natural Bushcraft's video I thought I'd give it another go (with a Fallkniven F1) and found I got very, very good results, okay it wasn't 'scary' sharp but better than I've ever achieved with oilstones, waterstones and leather hones etc.....etc...! Anyhoo, just thought I'd share my success, just wished I'd given it a serious go years back! (must confess I thought it was a tad daft when I saw Ray demo it....serves me right for doubting I s'pose)

(I've a sneaky feeling that most people have been doing this for years, the wife does say I'm a bit slow!!)

For honing I would still use a traditional hone but what ray was doing was after the knife had been honed and stropped he used the car window to put a few micro-serrations (saw-like teeth) onto the edge to give it more bite. I personally don't do this but for a quick touch up on the edge if you forgot you hone then the car window is a handy thing to know.

I've tried it after seeing Uncle Ray doing it. Does the same job as my Spyderco double-stuff. Well worth it for that 'bite' though.

I often give toothier edged blades a touch up on the side of a glass living room table, or a ceramic coaster, when my wife's not looking

I have not often used a car window to sharpen a blade....but I often put the kitchen knives at the Mencap house - whereI do relief work - over the edge of the glass "cutting board" to restore their edges.
Works OK

Hi Asa,
Thanks for the response, sorry I forgot to mention I do use waterstones and then leather hone/strop but always seemed to end up 'polishing' over, the edge if you know what I mean. By using the window edge, I seemed to have better control and therefore creating a finer, more toothy edge. I prob'ly need to concentrate learning on the stones and leather hone tho'.

Dave.

I use stones and a buchers steel, i suppose the car window would work if A i had a car.... and B i had not got my mini butchers steel with me
