Not sure what the name of the joint is called but if you take the legs out of the seat and put a small split in them and fit a wedge that fits proud, when you knock the legs back in the wedge makes them a tight fit that stays tight when in use.
 
Great bench, what did you use to make the holes for legs? I was refurbishing some old tools but as for the moment none is working properly and I can't make holes wide enough...
