Ground beetles and ground sheets !!!

Well, my new tentipi groundsheet developed two mysterious oval holes with no obvious cause.

But yesterday, I actually watched a largish ground beetle munch a hole through the ground sheet and then proceed to get it self stuck in the hole as its body was bigger than the hole that it had created.

Has anyone ever heard of this ? It's a new one on me.

I'm afraid not, the beetle just looked like the common black ground beetle that you often see around tents, but of course that still leaves lots of species it could be.
