Day Out Great escape jump

  • Hey Guest, Early bird pricing on the Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August) available until March 31st, we'd love you to come. PLEASE CLICK HERE to early bird price and get more information.
As you have the mighty Internetto, you can see many BBC programs through that, but you need to fool BBC into thinking that you are in UK.

I call it an IP scrambler, but it has a proper name. Might be illegal where you live though.

Our Guy in Russia was one of the most interesting and objective series I have ever seen. Interesting episodes, no politics. Just what I like..
I hope he is careful in his bike driving, I want to see him for years to come!

No, that is what I wrote.
They should have used the real deal though. All the bikes they used in the German Army were fully fit to perform the jump.
The best one was the BMW R75, but the others were very capable too.

Are you serious? I have ridden trials and enduros for many years and rebuilt and ridden several German WW2 military bikes. In my opinion you couldn't get an R75 to jump off a kerb let alone over twelve feet of fencing.

Wow, must have been amazing to see that unfolding. Guy Martin is a real character and refreshing to see a sports personality emerge who isn't averse to speaking his mind. It's no wonder that his tv shows have been such a success and I'd recommend folk check out his books that diarise many of his adventures.

Sadly you won't be able to see his shows on the BBC iplayer as he's tied in with Channel 4.

Worth watching a documentary film called On Any Sunday which possibly has the cheesiest opening scene I've ever seen.

Anyway, Steve McQueen is in it, really riding in real races and it turns out he was pretty damn good as well.
Good bit of motorcycling history to watch.

Brilliant documentary, interestingly Steve McQueen also funded its production.

Bud Ekins, Steve McQueen 's friend and mechanic made the Great Escape jump on a Triumph TR6. This bike was used because both he and McQueen raced, and new the bikes inside out. I've owned two in my lifetime, and they are light and easy handled, and for the time had decent suspension travel. Doing that jump on a period BMW or Zundapp would have been stupid, as would have been attempting it on a URAL or Dnepr. Another film where a Triumph was used in jump scenes for the same reason was Magnum Force.

The russki bikes can take that without a problem.

If they thought or calculated a bike correct of that time (WW2) could not safely do the jump, then they should not have scripted it.
IMO.

The movie was good. A good tale with a bit of true story behind!

It should have been a pure British movie though. Mixing in Americans just was not correct.
But that is typical Hollywood !

A quote from Bud Ekins on making the jump;

"We couldn't use a real BMW, not at the speeds we were running"

same applies to using Russian motorcycles or the more historically accurate Chinese Chang Jiang CJ 750.

I think they where filming it for a uk tv documentary, so I guess you may get to see it sometime.
the name of the bloke making the jump was Guy Martin ( I never heard of him, but the film people said he was famous)

Here's Guy Martin at his best.

It may just be me but I reckon not but old bikes are so much nicer looking than modern bikes. Same with motor cars pretty much.

I restored a -69 Bonnie back in Sweden. Looked very nice.
Rode nice too. But the quality was not there, compared to a late 60's BMW, Jawa or Husqvarna.
Nice engine, but leaked.
Sold the Bonnie, kept the BMW and Jawa.
I restored a HD, -78 model but that one was a real POS, design, materials, quality.....

But I prefer pre Ww2 bikes. Have a -38 CZ in the living room, to be followed by an experimental model of a -34 Jawa 175 Super Sport.
I restored the CZ from a hulk, but the Jawa was complete. Did a 'barn find' just after the Iron Border fell.
Cost me 50 Dmark......... Still in boxes.
Too many projects, not enough free time!

I hate riding bikes though.

Well you know where to send that box of bits.... I'm happy to add it to my stable! It will have a loving home, and a full medical check each year. :)
