Any one got any suggestions for starter knives for kids?

(One of mine has a Spyderco ladybug, which is ok but seems a little small even for a child's hand and doesn't have enough flare in the handle to adequately prevent the hand sliding down onto the blade.)

TIA! :-D

I bought my stepson a scandi fixed blade safety knife and wrote a bit about it here - the links in the first message point to the thread from where I bought the knife and a mini-review I did of it.

Ben loves the knife and is learning safely!

i like the frosts vikings, a bit like a slightly scaled down version of the deck knife. cost about £3.50, though i'm considering changing over to the plastic kellams, which are slightly smaller still, but nearly three times as much, and have much less of a guard.

cheers, and.

Good health to you too, Keith!

I'm thinking of this for my six year old, who is pretty adept with kitchen knives cutting fruit and veg, but I think needs more of a guard for cutting more resistant materials.

Some may disagree with this but I would say to stay away from a guard, my 5 year old has a small knife with no guard and he does fine with fish, chicken etc as well as Veg (hard stuff like Carrots) he makes great pointy sticks! Just make sure that the children know and practice good technique and they will be fine, and much more capable knife users. IMO

Thinking about a design suited to kids, there are two knives by custom maker Mike Snody that look like they could be suitable:

http://www.snodyknives.com/MS_Knives_GalleryMain.htm

they are the armadillo skinner and larger carolina skinner half way down the page.
I like the deep groove for the index finger and a short robust blade. I've gone so far as to print of Mikes designs lifesize and turn these into balsa mockups - the little armadillo skinner turns out to be a good fit to my 6yr old's hand.
Ironically despite being a gifted designer Mike only makes knives part time so getting hold of one of these is likely to be a nightmare. His work does at least give me ideas of what to look out for or to try and include in a homemade blade. Cheers
