Anyone got any experience of the Golite Hex 3 Tipi, got an opportunity to buy one (in green) and the inner ground sheet and bug net for under £150.00 in the USA, price includes shipping to the UK, all brand new, is it a bargain or is it a bloomer?

I was asking about these a little while ago but never got an answer.

I am just interested in the fly for my wife and i when we are using campsites or for high level camping, i can see a lot of possibility's for pitching the fly.

The price you have been quoted is very good as the cheapest i have seen in this country for just the fly is £189 and i think the ground sheet was an extra £40 and £50 for the inner tent.

I would be interested to know were you are getting this from as i might get one this spring.

One of my colleagues in the USA mailed me about it, he is into "camping" as he calls it and cannot believe we go with just a hammock and a tarp over here, one of the guys he goes with has one that "seemed like a good idea at the time" and asked if anyone wanted it, my colleague thought of me first apparently (ain't he a nice bloke? ), told him i would enquire if it was a good deal or not and that i would do some research on the web for pricing, but i cannot find anyone in the UK who stocks them, hence my post.

Have already told him that if i do go for it, that i would return it if i was not happy for a full refund (my colleague will hold onto the money order until he hears from me one way or the other), if the fly is £189.00 over hear looks like i might go for it, cannot go wrong or can I?

Maver, I've used one for the past two years either when visiting a normal campsite or when I take my boy out with me, I bought the full package. Brilliant peice of kit, Ben from Woodsmoke uses them on some of his courses. At that price you cannot go wrong, its a bargin.

Here is a link to a UK suplyer http://www.hike-lite.co.uk/acatalog/GoLite_Hex.html

Ground sheet is £50 and tent inner £70 so £309 for the hole lot.

As i said i am only after the fly sheet but it seemed quite pricey for just a fly but it does look very versatile so i will get one in sometime in the future. My wife is new to bushcraft, hill walking and the like and at this time we have only done wild camping under a tarp, which she loves but as she gains experience and we start heading to some of the mountain areas i think it would be good to use a campsite as a base so we can do day trips into the mountains to help build her stamina and experience. The Hex 3 seems to fill the need as a base tent quite well without the bulk and cramped space of a tent.

Maver,
I'd snap that up if I were you. I'm after one of these myself but not at UK prices. As soon as the right opportunity comes along...(I'm in the queue behind phil562).

My mate has one and being a 'travel light' freak, he really raves about it! I've slept in it in summer but not winter, when I think it would be a bit drafty as the fly does not quite reach the ground.

However it is light, roomy and well made. We use it as store tent when we do some high level walking in the Lakes as it is small and light enough to carry as an additional tent. I think you can use them without the supplied centre pole as well - use either a walking pole or suspend the tent from an overhanging branch.

Bought one in the classifieds from Mmcniven of this parish, had it at the Norhern meet.

Very good, light, versatile. Works well fly only etc. etc. Bit dear at full RRP, mind.

Pole is adjustable, so the fly can reach the ground if you want.

HTH,

Jim.

Mine will be here in two weeks time, :) can't wait :) , bargain at £ 150.00 for the fly & the nest.

Now where to go and test it out, got to be somewhere kiddie & fire friendly as i want to take both of my nephews out for the weekend when i get it.

Sounds great, let us know how you get on or give us a shout and I'll bring my young daughter down for a few hours and we can eyeball your new bit of kit, anything to get from under the feet of SWMBO :p

Its a brilliant bit of kit and very versatile, though to be fair I've only used mine three times in the year I've owned it so far. A real steal at that price, I paid £300 for the full monty.

If you have a decent extendable leki or similar and want to reduce the weight and space it takes up then you can forego the pole, but its pretty damn compact and light as it is!

Very pleased with mine despite paying nearly double what you have...

Is this the same as the one Ray Mears uses in his trip to Belarus (Ray Mears Extreme Survival Series 3 DVD)?

There is also mention that you can light a fire INSIDE the thing - the one Ray uses has a vent-type hole at the top of the Tipi....

Was also looking at http://www.bisonbushcraft.co.uk/tipi.htm but they are a little on the pricy side, although extremely good quality....

not sure about mr mears, but i wouldnt be too keen on having a fire in mine, maybe a small boxed fire with the door open but even then I doubt it - whats silnylon like with sparks? That said there are 2 vents at the top to allow for air circulation so its a possibility at least, and stoves are therefor no problem.

for me they are a great bit of kit and ideal if weight is an issue, I got mine sent to a outlaw (sorry inlaw ;) ) in the states and had it brought over by another, thats definately the way to go - price in UK is maybe a bit steep (I got the floor and the nest thrown in in the states for the same price as the outer tipi here - £180)

Guess what folks, it turned up today, looking at it i dont think it has ever been used, the stuff bags still have the price labels and the Go-Lite tags on them, checked the fly and nest out not a thing wrong with them - what a bargain, im well chuffed, now just got to find a site where i can go and use it and where i can have a fire. :D
