Looks like I have a knife project on the Horizon , I'd like the handle to be ( if possible ) made of the stuff that will give off an ambient glow , does anyone sell scales made of that stuff?

Thanks

The GB was for high quality GITD powder. BB member Warrensmith makes hessian micarta with the powder incorporated in the resin. The results are lovely. You could PM him, I'm fairly sure he'll be making some.

If not, I have a piece I never got round to using. It doesn't have much of the powder in it, but it's enough.

Hi Mate - Duncan (FGYT) builds in tritium sticks which glow for 10 years without exposure to daylight...might be preferable if the knife will be covered by a jacket

Thanks for the generous offer, I'll try and get in touch with Warrensmith ( user name ? ) on BB 1st.

HI

there are 2 ways to do it one is Glow in the Dark powder (GITD) which absorbs light and gives it off but will run out after time if not recharged ( 15min-8hrs dependant on colour)

the other way is Tritium Vials which are a radioactive element that glows for 15-25yrs (dosnt just stop but then diminishes )

both have advantages and disadvantages

GITD powder can be added to glue so cast into pins or slots etc Tritium Vials are fairly delicate (glass) and need to be mounted or potted

you can get G10s with a translucent filler and GITD powder
or by the powder
Tritium Vial are is available from Fishing shops or Ebay

I have made GID powder mosic pins and mounted Vials in Acrylic rod

I keep wanting to do a scale with large Trits in underneath the scale but showing throu an acrylic liner

there's loads in the net

FGYT , Thanks , what happens if you mount the Trits in a large amount of GITD Stuff set into the scale?

you most likely wouldnt see the Trit if the GITD is to thick over the top

neither of these will give a Glowing handle you can see at much distance tho a whole GITD scale will give the best chance in Green ( the brightest and longest lasting glow colour)

if you use the fishing viles in the handle they would fit in fine, you would need to cut out a slot to place it in then cover it with clear resin to secure it, a handle made from a dark colour would be better as it should help hide the vile but reflect the light a bit...

you could make it propper bling and use clear casting resin to make scales mout them on puter or brass, then do the above so you get an all round light/glow the whole night, it would look propper cool at night....;)

Actually this could be relatively easy to do.

take favoured blade and remove current scales.
create molds from scales using silicone or rubber or even milliput or similar.
cast new scales in clear resin with tritium inserts in place.
drill and affix new scales to knife.

jobs a good'un

Good in theory, but acrylic is brittle. It won't stand being dropped or too much flex. It's one of the reasons micarta incorporates fibrous material, much like fibreglass it needs some structure.

It's also very easy to make.

If you go to a specialist resin shop, you will be able to get a variety resins with varying degrees of hardness and brittleness. Some are rock hard, some are soft and squishy, (like a hard jelly !); and there is everything in between.

You will need to tell tham what you are doing and they will recommend a suitable product.

Quite so, i was just about to post the same thing ;)

think you will find it difficult to get a casting resin to do it without a structural filler of some sort

however i do have some 10mm thick clear acrylic sheet i keep meaning to try as scales they have a blue green tinge on the edge when polished to simulate that glass look haven't been able to face poilshing up a tang as it would eb on full view etc

Apropos of absolutely nothing but I just thought of filling the fuller on a blade with GITD powder

On pulling out the knife I could exclaim "Beware, there are Orcs about!"

mine does glow blue when Orcs are about

however the Orc aura generator to test it is a tad expensive ;)
